My interest in mosaics happened by accident really. I was looking for a set of table mats a few years ago and couldn’t find any that I liked. I did find a mosaic kit for a table mat though, and decided to have a go. I have been hooked ever since!
The majority of my mosaics are inspired by the colours, shapes and patterns in nature. It is not often that I mosaic anything manmade. I try to capture any movement that the image creates, which is very hard to do and I am gradually learning to use the grout to help with this. The grout can play a very big role in adding movement if you get it right!
I mostly work in stained glass and vitreous glass. I am gradually developing my own style and technique and I find that I like to use different sized pieces of glass rather than tesserae of the same size as in traditional mosaic. Partly this is because you can get a very different effect, but also because some stained glass has beautiful swirls and patterns on it which you lose if you cut it up into small pieces.
Most of my work is custom made and I am always happy to discuss ideas with clients. I would love to have a big project to get stuck into or a floor/outdoor mosaic to have a go at. Sometime in the future I would also like to see if I could mosaic a window – I might try it on our conservatory! I have seen it done and it looked absolutely beautiful.
